What Is the Napoleonic Historical Society?

Napoleonic Historical Society logoThe Napoleonic Historical Society’s mission is “to study, share and stimulate interest in the history of the Age of Napoleon.” Members are a diverse group of people. Some are battle reenactors who can argue over every maneuver that won or lost a conflict. Some are cultural and art enthusiasts who might clash (or agree) over Josephine’s character and Jacques-Louis David’s role as a propagandist. Some are unapologetically enthusiastic about Napoleon Bonaparte the leader and the man. Others are critical of his personal legacy. Whatever your opinion or level of expertise, you’ll find a friendly face open to your point of view. You’re sure to expand your knowledge—and enjoy the camaraderie.

Of course, I’m biased, due to my years with the society. I’ve attended annual conferences in locations as varied as Havana, Toronto, and Gettysburg. Each has been a unique educational and social event. Currently, I’m a director and secretary of the organization.

I invite you to look over our website, and participate in the discussions on our Facebook page (no membership dues required). Most of all, I hope you’ll join the organization itself (a modest $30 membership).

2019 Napoleonic Conference, Montréal, September 13 – 15

If you can, consider attending this year’s annual conference in Montréal on September 13- 15. Planned presentations range from Napoleonic campaigns in Africa and SE Asia; Empress Marie Louise and the birth of the King of Rome; Dutch-Belgian Troops at Waterloo; Napoleon’s 100 Days before Waterloo; the Louisiana Purchase; and America’s Relations with Napoleonic France. And, of course, there will be good meals in interesting locations (the Royal Montreal Curling Club, for example!).

Please, take a moment now to look over the details of the conference and society membership on the NHS website.  We’d love to have you join us.

Here’s a photo from the gala dinner at last year’s conference in Williamsburg, Virginia. Don’t worry—period costumes are fun but not required.

  2. I’m in the Florida area. Just found out from “23 and me” dna test that through my paternity I’m direct line from Napoleon Bonaparte and we came from the same
single ancestor. I always thought he was French, but apparently he was Italian from Tuscany for 10 generations and then move to Corsica.

  3. What fun! Congratulations. Yes, Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Corsica–check out my posts about it here: https://mrodenberg.com/finding-napoleon-in-corsica-born-in-ajaccio-buonaparte/.

When my brothers and I had our DNA done, we found that our Spanish heritage was actually about half Indigenous Mexican. We knew a great-grandfather had been a Spanish diplomat in Mexico so that’s got to be where the story veers off from what we’d been told. I hope someday to have time to investigate it more and, perhaps, write a novel based on it. It’d be a great adventure!

    Congratulations on your illustrious ancestry!

    Margaret

  4. Hello
I was a member of Bob Snibbe’s Napoleonic Society of America for many years.
I was on the Society’s first tour to France (1984) and many of the yearly conferences.
Basically, though, I am inquiring as to whether you also have a Napoleonic tour to France as my wife and I would certainly be interested.
Please let me know if you have any information or perhaps are planning a visit to Paris.
    Thanks in advance.
